Anyway, 3 years later, they sent a letter that they’re going to garnish his wages and the first garnishment comes out this week. He called the number on the report and all they said was that they’ll start the investigation if he sent them a copy of a utility bill showing he hasn’t been living in NY (which I don’t understand). Is there anything else he can do so that they can speed up this investigation and have the garnishes stopped? We don’t have the money to pay for a lawyer so that isn’t an option right now. Thanks!
I’m not exactly sure if he received a summons or not. Since he’s been living with me since April, I have not seen one, though that doesn’t mean one wasn’t served. The report I was referring to was issued from the civil court of New York City and the letter talking about the garnishments is from Hewitt Garnishment Administration Unit. Do you think having him pull up his credit report and disputing it with them will help? Thanks for your answers!

Is my understanding correct? If not, what am I missing?

Wouldn’t it be better to contact the 3 credit companies and put a security freeze on our credit? Yes, it’s a hassle if we actually want credit, but then no one can get credit in our name, period. No hassles with laywers and ID theft insurance, because no one can get through to the credit companies.
