The cost of identity theft varies. It could be from few hundred to few hundred of thousands of dollars. You also have to include many months of frustration, phone calls, lawyer fees, etc
By lay you are only liable for $50 of the charges provided that you reported this to your bank when you found out. Most banks will not even charge you the $50. This is the personal costs, but credit fraud costs companies billions of dollars every year. The $50 is only for a credit card. There are other costs involved such as credit damage and time to repair your credit, the effect on your current accounts, and hassles of clearing your name!
